How to Make Friends in Delhi: 10 Ways That Actually Work in 2026

Delhi is a city of twenty million people where it's surprisingly easy to feel alone. Here's how to change that.

Delhi has more going on than almost any city in India: gardens, monuments, theatre, food, gigs, markets. And yet a lot of people here spend their weekends alone, because their college friends scattered, their colleagues live an hour away, and every group plan dies in the chat.

If that’s you, here’s what actually works.

The short answer

The best way to make friends in Delhi is to pick one thing you enjoy and do it with the same small group, at the same place, every week. A morning walk in Lodhi Garden, a weekly badminton game, a food walk with the same four people. Friendship comes from repetition, not from one big party.

1. Mornings in Lodhi Garden or Sunder Nursery

Lodhi Garden is Delhi’s favourite place for an early walk or run, and the same people come at the same time every morning. Sunder Nursery, next to Humayun’s Tomb, is quieter and beautiful for a weekend walk. Go at a fixed time for two weeks and the regulars will start saying hello.

2. Play a sport

Pay-and-play courts and grounds across the city, like the facilities at Siri Fort Sports Complex, make it easy to play badminton, tennis or football without a club membership. Regular games are almost always short of a player. Ask if you can join; sports are the easiest way in, because nobody asks why you’re there.

3. Eat your way through Old Delhi

A food walk through Chandni Chowk, with its parathas, chaat and jalebis, is one of the best things to do in Delhi, and it’s better shared. Go with four or five people and order one of everything. Dilli Haat is another easy meeting point, with food from across India in one place.

4. Go to talks, films and plays

India Habitat Centre runs talks, film screenings, exhibitions and performances, many of them free. Akshara Theatre and Kamani Auditorium stage plays regularly. Going alone is completely normal at these, and the interval gives you something to talk about with the person next to you.

5. Walk through history

Heritage walks through places like Mehrauli Archaeological Park, Hauz Khas and the old city bring together curious people who like the same things you do. They’re easy to join solo, and you spend two hours walking and talking with the same small group.

6. Become a regular

Pick one café, maybe around Hauz Khas, Khan Market or Connaught Place, and go at the same time each week. Being a familiar face is how a lot of city friendships quietly start.

7. Run a race, or train for one

Delhi has a big running scene, and races like the Delhi Half Marathon come with months of group training runs beforehand. Training groups meet early, run together and often have breakfast after. Few things bond people like a 6 a.m. run in winter.

8. Volunteer

Teaching programmes, animal shelters and clean-up drives across the city need regular weekend volunteers. Working side by side with the same people every week is one of the most reliable ways to make real friends.

9. Join small plans, not dating apps

Most “find friends” apps still match you one-on-one with a stranger, which feels like a date whether you want it or not. Small group plans with a clear purpose are far easier.

That’s what SceneHai is built for. People nearby post small plans like “Sunday badminton, need 2 more”, “Chandni Chowk food walk” or “heritage walk in Mehrauli”, and you request to join. The host decides who comes, the group gets a chat, and you meet at a public place. SceneHai launches in Delhi in December 2026, and you can join the waitlist now.

10. Make the second plan

Meeting someone once is easy. Friendship happens the second and third time. Before you leave, suggest something specific: “Same walk next Sunday?” or “Want to try that place in Chandni Chowk on Saturday?”. A specific plan gets a yes far more often than “let’s catch up sometime”.

Staying safe

  • Meet first in public places: parks, cafĂ©s, busy markets.
  • Prefer small groups when you’re meeting someone new.
  • Tell a friend where you’ll be, especially for early-morning or late-evening plans.
  • If something feels off, leave.

Questions people ask

Is it hard to make friends in Delhi? It can feel that way, because the city is big and spread out and people commute a lot. Picking one area and one regular activity makes it much easier.

Where do young people hang out in Delhi? Hauz Khas, Connaught Place, Khan Market and the cafés of South Delhi in the evenings; Lodhi Garden and Sunder Nursery in the mornings.

Is it safe to meet people from apps in Delhi? Meet in public places and in small groups, tell someone where you’ll be, and choose apps where hosts approve who joins and accounts are verified.
